my Experience
As a strengths-based coach for the California Justice Leaders (CJL) program—an AmeriCorps initiative led by Impact Justice—I had the honor of supporting justice-involved young adults as they reclaimed their futures. My role centered on one-on-one coaching using Gallup’s Name, Claim, Aim framework, with a primary focus on helping participants name their top CliftonStrengths and begin to understand how those strengths showed up in their daily lives.
Before individual sessions, I led a group coaching introduction that explained what strengths-based coaching is, how it works, and how participants could prepare for their session. Together, we explored the power of self-awareness and the idea that their greatest potential often lies in what’s already strong—not what’s “wrong.”
Each 30-minute session became a space for participants to recognize their natural talents, reflect on their past through a lens of possibility, and begin to imagine how they could bring those strengths into their education, work, and leadership.
What stayed with me most was the sheer determination and brilliance of these young adults—many were pursuing higher education, some even at the PhD level, while others were building resumes, launching careers, and committing to being credible messengers in their own communities. All were overcoming their pasts, and all were leading with courage.
This experience affirmed my belief that coaching—when done with compassion and intention—can be a powerful catalyst for transformation. My clients don’t need “fixing” - they need space to see what’s strong within them and the support to build forward.
